Dear Parents,
The primary goals of our summer reading program are to promote a love of

level. If you feel it would be beneficial for your child to read from another
grade’s list, please feel free to do so. Please indicate this on the
verification form. We encourage you to become involved with the
selections your child makes. Have an enjoyable summer and remember to
Read! Read! Read!

SCHOOL
2012 SUMMER READING
Summer is a time to
relax and enjoy a break from the academically regimented school year.
However, it is important that students continue to read during the summer.
Reading should be a pleasure; it opens new worlds, expands knowledge and
vocabulary, and helps students become better writers.
This summer we
encourage students to read a minimum of 2 books from the attached list. Most of
these books are on the 2012-2013 Battle of the Books List. Parents should
verify that students have read 2 books and students should turn in the bottom
signed document the first week of school. During the first six weeks of school,
students will be a part of literature circles to discuss and review these books.

Please save this form
and have your child return it during the first week of school in August.
My son/daughter has
read the following selections from the list in preparation for literature circles.

Summer
Reading
for
Students and Faculty Involved in Grades 9-12.
Each summer, colleges within the University of North Carolina system choose
summer reading books for all incoming freshmen and transfers. Much thought goes
into the process of choosing just the right book. UNC-CH, for example has
chosen THE SHALLOWS: What the Internet is
Doing to Our Brains for the incoming class of 2012. The members of the
selection committee take several things into account:
- Intellectually stimulating — stretch students’ minds, cause students to think about things they might not have before
- Enjoyable, engaging, relatively short or easy to read, up-to-date
- Reading that will provoke interesting discussion
- Appropriate for developmental level of incoming students
- Addresses a theme/topic that is applicable to students themselves (i.e., societal issues)
In an effort to prepare our students for future college entrance and to foster
a desire to grow through reading, HCA is instituting a summer reading program
for the entire high school. The book that has been chosen is entitled Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis, a
non-fiction book about a young 18 year old girl who felt the call to serve
God’s people. For a brief insight into the book, please refer to the link
provided. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfXgCx3f_1c
This book is
available for download as an eBook for $10.99; it is available in hard copy for
$11.99 from Christianbook.com; and it is also available as an audio cd for
$19.49. There will be a limited number of books and audio cd’s available for
check-out from HCA.
Each grade will take
part in sharing information pertaining to the book in a seminar upon returning
to school. We need student volunteers to lead discussion and organize the
presentation of information. As you read this summer, and begin your research,
consider being a leader and contact Mrs. Bridgers, Mrs. Green, or Mrs. Lockamy.
9th grade:
Information about Uganda – government, location, climate, culture, etc…
10th
grade: Information about disease/sickness in Uganda – malnutrition, AIDS,
chicken pox, worms, etc…
11th grade:
Information about Amazima Ministries – how money is raised, where the money
goes, the cost to feed/house children, the goals of the ministry.
12th
grade: Information about being a missionary and the faith presented in the book
– commitments, sacrifices, living conditions, God’s call to help others, etc…
Please encourage your
children to take part in this summer reading project. This is a non-intrusive,
low stress invitation to read something that we feel will be uplifting and
motivating educationally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Please encourage your
children to take part in this summer reading project. There is nothing to turn
in and no test to take upon returning to school – just the opportunity to share
thoughts and learn from each other.
It is with much hope
and prayer that this will be the beginning of many meaningful summer reading
projects for our students, faculty, and perhaps parents as well.
It is also with much
prayer that this summer project will be the prompt for HCA students to begin
local and state missions in the 9th, 10th, and 11th
grades and global missions as seniors.
If you have any
questions about the summer project, please feel free to contact me.
